We install tarmac driveways in Bowdon for the Victorian and Edwardian houses on the hill, the homes along Langham Road and Green Walk, and the properties down towards Bowdon Vale and Dunham Massey. Steep approaches are common in WA14, and a well-compacted tarmac surface gives good grip in wet and icy weather. As experienced tarmac driveway installers, we take extra care with sandstone walls, old kerbs and gate piers throughout the job.
Each Bowdon property gets a free site survey, where we measure the gradient, check the drainage at the gate and talk through edging that will suit the house. A fixed written quote follows, with no obligation. Every stage is completed by our own fully insured employees, never sub-contractors, so the person who planned the work is close at hand while it is carried out.

Customer opinions matter to us. Most of our work comes from recommendations, and here is what customers say.

Tarmac is quick to lay, tough and good value over a large area. It copes with heavy vehicles, gives a smooth, seamless finish and is easy to maintain.
Bowdon's slopes are where tarmac really earns its place, binding into one firm sheet that will not creep downhill like gravel. To suit the older houses, we often edge the drive with reclaimed sandstone kerbs or granite setts, or lay red tarmac for a warmer tone. We also resurface worn private roads, repair frost cracks and potholes, and form wider turning areas for visitors.
Want a permeable finish instead? Ask about resin driveways.
Water gets in, freezes and breaks the surface up further.
Once the surface starts to fret, patches rarely last.
Low spots mean the surface or base has sunk.
Old tarmac loses its colour and starts to look worn.

Much of Bowdon is a conservation area, with sandstone boundary walls, tall gate piers and established trees lining the streets. Drives here are often steep, long or both, so we design the falls carefully and fit a channel drain at the gate to stop water running out across the footway. Loose gravel that spills onto the road is a regular reason homeowners get in touch. Where heavy vehicles use a shared private road, we build a deeper base. Any crossing works are approved by Trafford Council.
We also lay tarmac driveways in these nearby areas, with the same team and the same guarantees.

Straight answers to what people ask us most. Anything else, just call.
Often, yes. If the existing tarmac is sound and the levels allow, we repair cracks and soft spots, apply a tack coat and lay a new surface course over the top. If it is breaking up, sinking or would end up too high against the house or the kerb, we dig out and start from a proper base.
Tarmac (asphalt) is one of the most recycled construction materials: old surfaces can be planed off and reused in new mixes. It is not permeable, so on a front driveway we make sure rainwater runs to a lawn, border or soakaway rather than onto the road.
A well-laid tarmac driveway typically lasts 12 to 15 years before it needs resurfacing or major repair. Small repairs to cracks may be needed over time, but other than that it needs very little maintenance.
Very easy. A sweep and an occasional jet wash keep it looking good. Keep weeds off the edges and get any cracks sealed early so water cannot get underneath.
Bowdon prices reflect the gradient and length of the drive, the drainage needed at the gate, and the edging you choose, such as reclaimed stone or new setts. Clearing old gravel and working around walls and piers also takes time. We will measure it properly and give you a fixed written figure. Call 0161 841 7075 for a free survey.
No. Our tarmac driveways are always laid by our own qualified and fully insured team. We never use sub-contractors, so the people who survey your drive are the people who build it.
Very often, yes. Tarmac gives Bowdon's steep drives the grip and strength they need and copes with delivery and building vehicles. We fall it towards a drainage channel or a planted edge so rainwater stays on your land and meets the permeable surface rules. On the most sensitive conservation frontages, resin bound or traditional setts can look more in keeping, and we will discuss both.
In England, a new front driveway over 5 square metres that is not permeable needs planning permission if rainwater runs onto the road. If it drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within your property, it usually does not. We plan the falls and drainage so your new drive stays within the rules.
