We lay tarmac driveways in Whalley Range for the large Victorian villas along Upper Chorlton Road and Demesne Road, the converted houses close to Alexandra Park and the homes around St Bede's College. As tarmac driveway installers across M16, we are often asked to surface shared frontages for villas now divided into flats. Tarmac covers a big area cost-effectively and gives a smooth, durable finish for several residents' cars.
Our free site survey looks at walls, gate piers, trees and how many cars need space, and for shared frontages we are happy to meet several owners together. A fixed written quote follows with no obligation. Our own fully insured team carries out every stage, never sub-contractors, so each resident deals with the same people from the first visit to the finished drive.

Customer opinions matter to us. Most of our work comes from recommendations, and here is what customers say.

Tarmac is quick to lay, tough and good value over a large area. It copes with heavy vehicles, gives a smooth, seamless finish and is easy to maintain.
Tarmac suits Whalley Range's big shared frontages and rear parking areas, where a seamless surface is easier to keep clean than loose gravel. To respect the villas, many owners choose red tarmac with a clay or blue brick border, or black tarmac edged with granite setts. We also resurface broken drives, mend potholes and cracks, and reshape frontages so several cars can park without blocking each other.
Want a permeable finish instead? Ask about resin driveways.
Water gets in, freezes and breaks the surface up further.
Once the surface starts to fret, patches rarely last.
Low spots mean the surface or base has sunk.
Old tarmac loses its colour and starts to look worn.

Whalley Range was laid out in the Victorian era as a suburb of grand detached and semi-detached villas, and much of it is now protected as a conservation area. Conversion into flats means a single forecourt may now serve four or five households, and fitting their cars in without losing the old boundary walls and trees takes planning. Surfaces we replace are often broken asphalt or gravel with no real foundation. Manchester City Council handles dropped kerbs here, and we explain what is needed.
We also lay tarmac driveways in these nearby areas, with the same team and the same guarantees.

Often, yes. If the existing tarmac is sound and the levels allow, we repair cracks and soft spots, apply a tack coat and lay a new surface course over the top. If it is breaking up, sinking or would end up too high against the house or the kerb, we dig out and start from a proper base.
Tarmac (asphalt) is one of the most recycled construction materials: old surfaces can be planed off and reused in new mixes. It is not permeable, so on a front driveway we make sure rainwater runs to a lawn, border or soakaway rather than onto the road.
A well-laid tarmac driveway typically lasts 12 to 15 years before it needs resurfacing or major repair. Small repairs to cracks may be needed over time, but other than that it needs very little maintenance.
Very easy. A sweep and an occasional jet wash keep it looking good. Keep weeds off the edges and get any cracks sealed early so water cannot get underneath.
Whalley Range tarmac costs depend on the size of the frontage or car park, how much old surface and base must be removed, the edging, drainage and any heritage details to protect. Shared drives can be quoted for the whole building. A dropped kerb, if required, is a separate council application. We survey free and give a fixed written price. Call 0161 841 7075 to book.
No. Our tarmac driveways are always laid by our own qualified and fully insured team. We never use sub-contractors, so the people who survey your drive are the people who build it.
Tarmac is often the best value for Whalley Range's large shared frontages and rear car parks, because it covers big areas evenly and takes delivery vans. We fall it to soakaways or planted borders to meet the permeable front garden rules. On smaller single-house frontages in the conservation area, resin bound or clay block paving can sit more comfortably with the villas.
In England, a new front driveway over 5 square metres that is not permeable needs planning permission if rainwater runs onto the road. If it drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within your property, it usually does not. We plan the falls and drainage so your new drive stays within the rules.
